Raising Our Voices: Queens — Building Bridges Through Words & Movement
All are welcome!
Join us for a special Queens-wide celebration of Raising Our Voices, exploring how dance and poetry can build bridges across words and movement, communities and experiences.
12:00–1:00 PM: Lunch, brain health trivia & music
1:00–2:30 PM: Interactive performance, dance and poetry activities, and the unveiling of zines created by older adults and people living with dementia across Queens.
Witness dances ideated and choreographed by older adults from Queens Center for Gay Seniors and Jamaica Older Adult Center, then join us in dance and poetry activities that invite everyone to create, connect, and move together.
We’ll also reveal a collection of zines co-created by people living with dementia and older adults from communities across Queens—capturing their words, ideas, stories, and creative voices.
Come celebrate what happens when we make space for one another to be heard, seen, and creative.
All ages and experiences are welcome. Come dance, listen, connect, and celebrate with us!
About the project:
Over the past several months, Raising Our Voices has brought DanceStream Projects' dance and brain health work into five communities of older adults and people living with dementia across Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx.
Working alongside Mark Timmons, a poet living with dementia and DanceStream's teaching artists, participants have been creating their own poems and translating their words, memories, ideas, and experiences into movement-based language.
The project explores what happens when dance and poetry become tools for expression, connection, creativity, and being heard.
Now, we're getting ready to celebrate—and share—what participants have created through a series of culminating events this December.
We'd love for you to join us in celebrating the voices, creativity, and movement that have emerged through Raising Our Voices.
