Mettler-Based Group Dance Improvisation Workshops in NYC

Join DanceStream Projects executive director, Magda Kaczmarska, for this 12-session workshop series designed to cultivate the art of body movement to build creative community. GROUP-BODY DANCE is a guided approach of group improvisation that offers a safe, inclusive and creative approach to communal dance exploration.

Founded on the principles of group dance improvisation of Barbara Mettler, a visionary who believed dance is a basic human need and should be accessible to every body, in each session, we will dive into a specific element of dance informed by Barbara’s 60+ years of practice in cultivating the understanding of the body as instrument and movement as the material of dance.

Together we will progress from individual to increasingly larger group exploration, offering an expansion of each individual kinesphere, nurturing an understanding of individual and collective creativity and sensitivity.

  • This 2 hour-long class is open to all movers, at all stages of experience.

  • FREE with registration

Group improvisation is not a restriction of individual expression but rather an extension of it, enabling each of us to help create experiences far greater than any we could ever create alone... How do we learn to improvise as a group? The first thing is to shift our orientation from MY movement to OUR movement.
